Celebrating Community and Culture Sustainably

UWC Thailand prides itself on hosting events that celebrate diverse cultures and foster community spirit. However, we recognize the environmental impact these gatherings can have. Our Sustainability Steering Group is committed to finding ways to make our events more sustainable, reducing their carbon footprint and minimizing their environmental impact.

One of our student-led initiatives, “Plastic Free Phuket,” inspires us to reduce plastic waste. We are gradually phasing out single-use plastics at events, offering reusable wheat straw tableware for a small rental fee. The proceeds help fund even more green initiatives! Some cultural groups are also exploring eco-friendly alternatives like homemade banana leaf packaging for dry food items.

UWC Thailand encourages responsible water usage by providing water refill stations throughout our events. Rental cups are included in our tableware sets, further reducing the need for vendors to distribute disposable cups.

Food waste reduction is another priority. We’re partnering with one of our school drivers who runs a duck and goose farm, where leftover food scraps are happily devoured. We are also working on an informational campaign to encourage mindful food portioning and responsible waste disposal by both attendees and vendors.

We’re still refining our system, but our commitment to sustainability is unwavering. We’ll continue to separate waste and explore new ways to minimize our environmental footprint with each new event on the horizon. Stay tuned for updates on our progress!
